Shawl Collared Cowl

This has been my first bit of knitting for quite some time.   I love knitting but it is my 'Nemesis' as I really think I should be a lot better at it than I actually am.  I get disappointed when I can't make patterns that are described as 'easy'.  I had to learn how to knit 'short rows' for this pattern.  Short rows were new to me but I worked them out.  This pattern is described as 'easy'.  It is, but. . . . there is a big but for me. . . . . not butt, but but!  I find the finished garment like a Chinese Puzzle.  Fathoming the right side and the wrong side, the top and the bottom.  To be quite honest my Dad fathomed out how to wear it properly before I did.  Thank you Dad.  I chose three 'vintage' buttons from my collection rather than buy new buttons.  Which I thought was very thrifty and resourceful of me.
Button One
Button Two
Button Three
I was happy to complete the cowl, I selected the buttons and got sewing.  I sewed all three in place and then put on the cowl.  Something was not right.  Doh I had sewn the buttons on in the wrong place!  I snipped and tried again.  Sewing all three in place for a second time.  Nope.  Doh!  Still in the wrong place.  Third time lucky.  Buttons in the right place, but one stubborn button is upside down.  Bah!  It can stay like that for a while.

This yarn was a pleasure to knit, I like the textural effect from the thick and thin in one yarn.  The finished cowl is very warm.  I wonder how long I can live with the upside down button for?

  1. Love the colours in your wool. I started a scaft yesterday it is the first time I have picked up a pair of needles in a very long time. Forgot how much fun knitting is.

  2. I love that shawl/collar/cowl! But I vote for righting the wrong of the button as you'll always see it and it's a very pretty button. Very cool to use 3 different ones you had! Bravo, my friend! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

Even with the upside down button :-)
Thanks for your lovely comment over at mines, if you are thinking of a makeover at yours, she is super cheap, only cost me $18, sorry not sure what that would be in pounds

  5. I think people either find knitting easy or crochet easy, and will always prefer one over the other. I like knitting, but prefer crochet as it suits my want for things to grow quickly. The Cowl looks lovely, great colours, and lovely buttons.

  9. Lovely cowl!

I made one of these for my Mum. I really liked the pattern but I got confused too - the confusing part for us is trying to put it on when you don't undo the buttons! Give that a try and you'll be flummoxed!

  10. Thank you for all your compliments, I still have an upside down button, I will get round to correcting it! Hannonle you have made me feel so much better! I am glad I am not the only one to find this garment puzzling, it is lovely when you get it right. Upside down is very good as it keeps your neck and shoulders warm :)

I appreciate and enjoy reading all of the feedback from your comments. Thank you for taking the time to stop by and sharing your thoughts. Sadly I have found it necessary to enable word verification, something I was trying to avoid...but I am receiving an unmanageable deluge of Spam! We don't want that do we? xxx :)
