When I was a child I had Penfriends from all over the world, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Philippines, Hong Kong, USA, France and Italy. We relied on Snail Mail. This is the 2011 version for me :)
I found this pretty patten on Ravelry and it is available as a free download. It looks like just the job for keeping all your crochet bits and bobs neat and tidy and ready to had. I think it is also nice a portable for 'Crochet on the go'. I always have too many craft projects on the go but this was a 'quick make' in between making 'Granny Squares. www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/leentjes-crochet-hook-case
I used some more of my 'Lucy Pack' of Stylecraft. I have really enjoyed the colours in this pack and it has been worth every penny. Beautiful colours that work well together all chosen and coordinated for you. I have never made crochet flowers before and I found these quick and cute.
I knew I would have to block this;
I was very worried as I have 'killed' acrylic more than one in the past. I searched Ravelry for 'How to Block Acrylic' and this website was very useful. http://beadknitter.blogspot.com/2009/03/you-can-block-acrylic.html
I followed the advice carefully and managed not to commit acrylic murder.
The fun part was filling the case.
A Place For Hooks
A place for Scissors and a Tape measure
A place for Needles, Stitch Markers and Pins
When it is all folded the additional flaps prevent the hooks from falling out. Attaching Velcro keep it all together. Every girl should have one!
I took a pair of scissors to the big old blanket! I managed to save about fifty squares. I think that was roughly half of them. I am going to remove all of the black border and replace it. I have already started to make more 'pretty' granny squares and I am hoping to sew them together alternating the old and new. I am quite pleased with how many of the original squares I saved.
My Garden is providing, we are living off the 'Fat of the land'. Ok I may be exaggerating but I do have Parsley and Rhubarb ready for harvesting. I have yet to find a recipe using both so we settled for a good old 'Rhubarb Crumble'. First pick your Rhubarb.
Trim it, wash it and chop it into pieces. Here is my top tip for cooking Rhubarb, I do not add any water or 'Sugar' but I mix it with two or three good tablespoons of Golden Syrup. (If you are trying to cut down on sugar - no sugar fizzy lemonade or ginger beer is good.) I then put it in a medium oven for about twenty minutes. It still keeps its shape rather than stewing down to a puree.
For the crumble topping:
175g/6oz Flour
75g/3oz Butter or margarine
75g/3oz Sugar
I rub the flour and fat together until it resembles breadcrumbs and then add the sugar. Place the crumble topping over the fruit and bake in a medium oven for a further twenty minutes, until golden brown. This crumble has been consumed with 'Toffee Ice-cream' or but my youngest stuck to his usual... 'Squirty Cream'.
When I was a child a comedy show used to be on tv on Sunday afternoons. It was called 'Rhubarb, Rhubarb'. The only words spoken for the whole show was 'Rhubarb'. I used to find it fascinating.
I do not usually like hanging my 'Dirty Laundry' out in public. I am treating this like some sort of Confessional Therapy. I have avoided looking at the damage to this poor old Granny square that I told you about here and here. I have been completely in denial, burying my head in the sand! I have washed and disinfected this poor old girl and she has beed residing in the Deep Freeze. Some of you made some useful suggestions as to what should be her fate. I have decided to salvage the squares that are worth saving, purely for sentimental reasons, (i am attached to this old blankie) and then - 'I shall rebuild her!' Like the 'Bionic Woman', 'Bionic Blanket' will be better and more beautiful than ever before It is going to be quite some task. I will of course keep you posted...
